We have enlarged our scope this year and are not only continuing our support of AIDS HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION, but we are also benefiting the REAL MEDICINE FOUNDATION.
Hot In Hollywood funds AIDS Healthcare Foundation's (AHF) HIV Mobile Prevention Education and Testing Unit. The mobile unit travels throughout Los Angeles providing
prevention education, counseling, HIV testing, and treatment referrals to AHF's healthcare centers. This year we are proud to welcome REAL MEDICINE FOUNDATION into the fold.
REAL MEDICINE started the same year as HOT IN HOLLYWOOD and their reach is global. Working in areas that are hit by war, natural disaster or extreme poverty, REAL MEDICINE
administers care of all kinds - HOT IN HOLLYWOOD will be giving directly to their HIV/AIDS Mobile clinics in India and Mozambique. These two great charities,
working together, create a more powerful and efficient system to provide care for those in need (around the world).
AIDS HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION
AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) began in 1987 as the first community-based AIDS hospice in Los Angeles County. Today, it is the largest specialized provider of HIV/AIDS medical care in the United States. The mission of AHF is “cutting-edge medicine and advocacy, regardless of ability to pay.”
AHF strives to provide the full range of treatment and care services to people living with HIV/AIDS, including: prevention education and testing, antiretroviral therapy (ART) treatment and care, pharmacies, managed healthcare/disease management, research, advocacy, and Out of the Closet® Thrift Stores, which help to support medical services and programs.
In 2001, AHF took its programs overseas with the purpose of introducing ART to developing, resource-constrained countries, and transferring skills and knowledge to healthcare providers so that they are able to manage this disease more effectively and efficiently. Worldwide, AHF now operates healthcare centers throughout Africa, Asia, Latin America, Mexico, and the United States and provides ART treatment and care services to nearly 70,000 people living with HIV/AIDS.
Proceeds from Hot In Hollywood benefit AHF’s HIV Mobile Prevention and Testing Unit, a customized recreational vehicle that travels throughout Los Angeles County to reach underserved populations with HIV/AIDS education, testing, counseling, and treatment referral services. Now called Magic’s Prevention and Outreach Wellness Education and Referral Unit (M-POWER-U) as a result of Magic Johnson’s granting AHF permission to use his name as someone who admitted he was living with HIV and doing something about staying healthy M-POWER-U helps bring people into high-quality care … people who frequently wait until they are very ill. Testing and counseling occur on the spot, and if necessary, people are referred directly into treatment and care at one of AHF’s Healthcare Centers. Over a 12-month period, M-POWER-U reaches an estimated 2,400 individuals, up to 50% being African American women, the largest growing newly infected HIV/AIDS demographic. The Mobile Unit will be present at Hot In Hollywood, with staff on hand to give tours, answer questions, and offer free testing and counseling.
Thanks to the support AHF has received from Hot In Hollywood, which has allowed for the continued expansion of M-POWER-U’s reach, AHF was selected by the City of Los Angeles as a major partner on a three-year HIV testing initiative that will significantly expand HIV testing and counseling across the City. The initiative will increase testing in communities with high demand for testing, and thus, reach many who are underserved by current testing systems particularly in communities of color.
